Power-saving
Snoozing
Because motes are wireless they can't be
plugged in, so they need batteries. However,
the batteries don't last very long if the
motes are constantly switched on. To solve
this problem, our motes have been programmed
to be asleep for most of the time. They
wake up about every 30 seconds. The sensors
take their readings, and then transmit the
data back to base. All this only takes a
second - saving lots of battery power. Now
the batteries can last a month instead of
a few days.
